Nothing was fired out of Quaker guns during the Civil War. Quaker guns were decoy guns made to make the enemy think a fortification or vessel had more cannon than it really had. Quaker guns were usually made of just a solid log of the right diameter.
The civil war was more deadly.

Gatling guns ,cannons
Technology took made many improvements during the Civil War. The guns went from smoothbore muskets to rifles that used minie balls. The Civil War also saw torpedoes, submarines and Gatling guns.
Nothing was used in place of gunpowder during the Civil War. Gunpowder was made and used extensively by both sides. During the Civil War the guns used black powder for propellant. Modern guns use smokeless powder, which has a completely different chemical composition.
