To be honest, the best thing to call Muslims is Muslims. Other names are typically not helpful.
Historically, the terms Mohammedan, Mohammetan, Musselmen, Musalman, and Moselman were used to refer to Muslims. However, all of these terms are seen as both antiquated and somewhat derogatory, much like how the word "Negro" is seen as regards Blacks.
There are also euphemisms or phrases that people use to refer to Muslims such as: "the followers of Islam", "Oriental Religious Followers", "the followers of the Arab religion", and numerous other terms. With the exception of "followers of Islam", all of these terms are inexact and only work because of these terms have a selective meaning, not because the term could not possibly refer to other groups.
