The white smoke could be valve stem seals. The overheating could be a partially blocked radiator. Don't bother trying chemicals to clean it out. Take the radiator to a shop and have them professionally clean it. could be a blowen head gasket!

Indirect injection diesels have large radiators because of the massive heat loss in the idi cylinder head, so you most likely have a cooling fan or thermostat problem. Make sure you don't have air in the cooling system, especially if the engine sits higher than the original.

well from what ive heard its easier to take off the front clip to replace them. But if you blew you head gaskets your better off just pulling the engine and studding your heads so it never happens again. I assume your probably running a chip, which it takes 40 pounds of boost to blow the head gaskets in the 6.0 Powerstroke. I own an 04 also, it is SCT tuned. I had my head gaskets changed and heads studded, havent had a problem since. But its usually a job for a Diesel Mechanic.
If, by "thermostat" you mean the radiator flow valve that controls engine coolant temperature, yes. All liquid cooled engines need such a thermostat.
