Ms. Parks was also a much sought after seamstress who made many of her own clothes. She was mentored by Dr. T. R. M. Howard. MD of Mound Bayou, MS.

Dr. Howard founded the Regional Council of Negro Leadership (RCNL) which met in Mound Bayou annually and brought hundreds of Black leaders from across the nation to the town. It was also one of me and my grand dad's (Will Emanuel Sanders) biggest barbecuing each year (no less than 500 barbecued chickens). Ms. Park attended these meetings, and in fact it was four days after an RCNL meeting in Montgomery, AL that she refused to give up her seat in 1955. Dr. King was relative unknown, and the Southern Christian Leadership Council (SCLC) was in its infancy.
