This extremely important discovery was made by Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleyev somewhere in the late 1800's. He suggested arranging the known elements by atomic weight (or mass) - which would, by extension, mean by atomic number - in order to predict the properties of as yet undiscovered elements. His system worked perfectly and enabled other scientists to fill in the blanks and complete what is known as the Periodic Table of Elements.
Normally you cannot do this except in a special test mode that simulates a 911 call. Warning: some 911 systems will receive this as a real 911 call!
J.J. Thomson (Sir Joseph John Thomson, 1856-1940), who demonstrated in 1897 that "cathode rays" consisted of negatively-charged particles, later named electrons.
The Moseley chart was based on using the atomic mnumber of the element, not the chemical properties. Because of the similarities between elements of the same period, this often created problems in establishing an order; Moseley's work enabled the change of the atomic number from an arbitrary selection to a definable property, measurable through experimentation.
