You can save any attachment to your computer. You will need Microsoft Access to actually open it.

For Microsoft Word documents it is "My Documents".

While being edited (before it's intentionally saved) Word documents are stored in the system's random access memory (RAM). Once the file is "saved" (*file, save as*), it is stored in the selected memory device. Saving a file to My Documents, for example, would save to the hard drive, solid state drive, jump drive, etc: the actual hardware where "My Documents" is located.
Yes it is, you can open documents from previous version but be patient when you save documents, if you want compatibility with previous versions then save it from Save As -> Word 97-2003 Document.

I work from home and have started using Microsoft Skydrive to network with others. It is free and you can upload and save documents securely. You can also select who has access to files and docuements.
Either drag items directly on to the USB from their location in your documents, or (if using Microsoft) click file, save as, my computer, and select your USB.
You can save documents in the trial version of MS Power point. It does not stop you, but makes it for some time only.
