I suggest you open the bonnet and look at the front of the engine below the exhaust manifold, it's very easy to see.
10w40 is fine
The gearbox oil fill plug can be located, in your Peugeot 306 2.0, on the top of the gearbox nears the back. The plug can be removed with a three-quarter inch socket
For the Turbo Diesel engine, approx. 4.5 L of oil will take the fill level on the dipstick from the middle of min to just under the max fill line. Unsure whether the petrol engines differ much or not at all.
This is the oil level light which will come on when you put the ignition on but dont start the engine. It will tell you how much oil you have in the car. It goes off once the engine starts.
