There are numbers on the block where the transmission connects to the motor right on the top write down the numbers and cross check them on the web there are a lot of sites where you cad run motor numbers and get the exact date of birth engine displacement compression ratio piston size and everything you want to know about that engine.
get the serial numbers off the side of the engine block, should be just below the freeze plugs on either the passenger side or drivers side of the block.

those are block casting numbers That block was used from 1969-1979. it was used in corvettes,camaro,trucks,nova,etc. the pad on the engine block(front edge,right head) will tell you production date ,engine size etc.
It depends on the manufacture. The eight digit of the vehicle identification number will tell you the size unless it has had the engine replaced. The engine size is also stamped on the driver's side of the engine block, above the starter motor.
