Phagocytosis is the process by which a cell engulfs matter and packages it into an internal vesicle. Pinocytosis is the same process but for a liquid. Collectively these can be referred to as endocytosis.

A type of human white blood cell called a phagocyte uses phagocytosis to ingest bacteria, toxins and other pathogens and delivers them to lysosomes (membrane bound vesicles of digestive enzymes). The phagocyte then undergoes autophagy (self digestion) and dies, during infection the build up of these dead cells gives rise to puss.
