Actually, a band is instruments such as brass, woodwinds, percussion, etc. without string instruments. A wind ensemble may or may not include the upright bass. New England String Ensemble was created in 1993.
Rising Fawn String Ensemble was created in 1979.
Art Ensemble of Chicago with Fontella Bass was created in 1970-08.
The lowest string on a four string double bass is an E string. If you have a fairly rare five string double bass then the lowest fifth string is a B string.
You would find violins, cellos and maybe a Double Bass.
Consort is a same family of instruments. The string consort: violin, viola, cello and bass. A wind consort is an ensemble of recorders in different registers.

The stringed bass/upright bass has the lowest register in the string family. The cello is also a bass string instrument, though it's not as low as the bass.
