Cortes began his journey to conquer the Aztecs in Veracruz. From Veracruz he traveled to Tenochitian which is was the capital city of the Aztecs.
Approx. 3,000-5,000 BC. until about 1532 when they were conquered by the Spanish under Cortes. Their capital city, Tenochtitlan, was located on an island in the middle of lake Texcoco, where modern-day Mexico City is. At its height, the Aztec "triple alliance" empire stretched from the Pacific shore to the Gulf coast, as far south as Xoconochco in modern-day Chiapas, Mexico.
The Aztecs were. Before 1325 AD, the Aztec or Mexica people (as they knew themselves) were a nomadic tribe that wandered throughout the land, looking for a place to settle and build their capital. Their state religion awaited the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy: that the wandering tribe would find the destined site for a great city whose location would be signaled by an eagle eating a snake while perched atop a cactus. The Aztecs saw this vision on what was then a small swampy island in the middle of lake Texcoco, after which they founded their capital city, on March 13, 1325. Not deterred by the unfavourable terrain, they set about building their city, using the chinampa system (misnamed as "floating gardens") for agriculture and to dry and expand the island. That city was Mexico-Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City
Because the original people at Mexico were Aztecs and they believed that if you saw an eagle eating a snake on a cactus that is were you were meant to live the Aztecs spend alot of time searching and than found it on an island which is now Mexico city
I think you are referring to the commonly known Aztec Empire. However, they referred to themselves as the "mexica" (pronounced "meshika") people. Their capital city was Tenochtitlan, located on an "island" in the "Lago (Lake) Texcoco." They were conquered by the Spaniards, lead by Hernan Cortes, in 1521.

Tenochtitlán was built on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco
the city was placed on the an island on the brink of lake texcoco
lake texcoco was an environmental challenge because the Aztecs had to make cause ways and aquiducts to get fresh water. the island that the Aztecs lived on was in the middle of the lake and they had to make a whole bunch of different ways to survive to just be on that island. They built chinampas which were rafts made out of rope that had dirt in it and then they planted on it and tied it up then secured it to the bottom of the lake. They basically used that to expand the land that they used for food. They built aquiducts for fresh water and cause ways to get from the island out to the land.
The Aztecs settled on an island in Lake Texcoco, which was located in the Valley of Mexico. It was here that they founded their capital city of Tenochtitlan, which eventually became Mexico City.
