To lunge a horse you typically use a lunge line and a lunge whip.

To apply the lunge line, put the clip side through the hole in your horses bit where the clip is going towards the horse. Then, run the line over the horses poll, behind the ears, and attach it to a bar in the bit on the other side. Now stand on the side where you first inserted the bit. Pick up your lunge whip and start to wave it around. Depending on the horses sensitivity, he may canter or walk off. Gradually let go of each loop of the lunge line until you are at or near the end. To crack a whip, fling it up and down in a fast motion and it should make a cracking sound, which will therefore make your horse go faster. To make him slow down, pull on the line a little and say wwhhooaa.. in a slow, quiet and calming tone.

Add on can be bought as well... for example, there are sturrip keepers, side reins, pessoas lunging system, and others. Search on Google or ask the sales person at your local tack shop :D

hope this helps!

What supplise do you need for a horse?

You will need grooming supplies including brushes and hoof picks. You'll need tons of buckets for food and water, training equipment such as a lunge line and lunge cavesson are recommended. Tack is another, then there is first aid supplies and horse clothing. I suggest calling a local stable and ask to visit the farm and see what you'd need for a horse.

Can you lunge a horse in a head collar instead of a cavesson?

It is not recommended to lunge a horse in just a head collar as it does not provide the same level of control and pressure distribution as a cavesson. A cavesson is specifically designed for lunging and helps prevent unnecessary pressure on the horse's delicate facial nerves. It is safer and more effective to use a properly fitted cavesson for lunging.

Why should you not lunge a horse for any longer than 35 min's?

I don't see any reason to not lunge a horse for any longer than 35 minutes. When I was breaking in my horse (training her), we'd spend over two hours on a lunge line. The only thing I can see wrong with that would be to lunge a horse at a full gallop or canter for a while. It would tire the horse out and could do serious damage if he or she were to overheat from extended periods of work.

What would you use to train your horse with out having to mount it?

Well non-mounted training is called ground work. I'd use a lunging kit ( Surcingle, cavesson, lunge line, and lunge whip) To work it in a frame, then free lunge in a round pen for bonding exercises. Also long lining the horse would be good. Bomb proofing is fun from the ground and trail courses too. Also don't forget that you can pony the non-ridden horse from the back of another more experianced horse.
