A hundred years ago was 1913 and no they didn't have computers. The car had just been put into production, the airplane invented in 1903, the telephone was still fairly new, and there were still people without electricity. The first TV was made in 1924, but not sold until 1947. People used radios for news, music, and entertainment all through the 1930's and 40's. The first computer was a government computer in 1947 that filled a room with the machinery it took to run it. It used magnetic tape for memory and key punch cards. The silcone chip hadn't been invented yet. There was no internet (1971 when it was invented by two MIT grad students) and desk top computers weren't sold until the late 1970's. The Apple 2E was an early home computer with 6g memory. The cell phone was invented by Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1974 and sold for government use. It wasn't until 1984 that they were sold to public. In 1913 the phonograph was a gramophone. There were no CD's, no tape, no recording devices, and no DVD's. Movies were silent and not in color. The first movie with sound was in 1928 and it was called the Great Train Robbery. The first color movie was in 1932 and that was the Wizard of OZ and to have color in it they had to hand color the film. No, in 1913 the world was a different place than it is today.

Well, there WAS electricity and telephones- but not for everyone. Refrigerators were a rarity. There were a few cars, but long distance travel was by ship or train. There were no antibiotics, and diseases such as polio, diptheria, smallpox, whooping cough, measles and mumps were a big problem. Radios in the home were just catching on, and the World Wars were still to come. Few movies, no computers, TVs, DVDs, or Ipods.

A2: Cars were generally only in big cities. They still didn't really catch on until about 1920. Running water was generaly only in cities, too. That and indoor Plumbing. Most people didn't have refrigeration, so most food was eaten fresh or smoked or somehow pickled to preserve it. Most people were still on wells, and water was often contaminated. Gas had been available many years, but was usually only available to in-towners--gas lines can only be run so far and got expensive. Oil stoves were common, as well as coal and wood. Radios were AM broadcast only unless amateur, and needed batteries, which were expensive and went dead soon. The filament battery was often connected to the car battery through a window, if there Was a car. Crystal sets, which only allowed one or two persons to listen thru headphones to local stations, required no batteries and were popular. The only record players were wind-up Victrolas or such--records were 78 RPM, in mono, and one 12" record often had only one song. Most labor laws weren't in effect. There were few unions. Many worked 12 hours a day , 7 days a week. Farmers still relied a lot on hand and horese-drawn labor. Things were cheaper, but the value of money was greater. Gold was often used in coins. An average day's wages was $1. A beer was 25 cents or so. Eggs were 18 cents a dozen. Women often weren't hired in factories. Many laws we take for granted now didn't exist. Taxes were lower, but landlords and bosses could just about do what they pleased. There were few safety laws--most drugs were over the counter legal until 1918. (You could get cocaine or laudanum, an opiate, at the drug store.) Depending on the county and state, sometimes cigarettes and/or liquor were illegal. You could buy huge firecrackers and dangerous chemicals through the mail. Guns, too. The international border was only a barbed-wire fence. There were very few federal agenicies as there are now to enforce, protect, and regulate.

Many still lived the same way people had for centuries.
