The Articles of Confederation lacked the detail, precision and strictness of the Constitution. Therefore, it allowed more freedom, chances for disobedience, and slack on justice. It was simply not precise enough, lacking minute details in its laws and rules. The Articles presented a very weak, slack central government that could not hold its own with thirteen young, rash colonies running wild beneath it. This seems a rather rash assertion running wild without any evidence to support it. This presented a problem. The colonies needed a legal, official, government document stating the yes and no's of government, states, laws, and citizenship. Also, the world needed to see a united nation standing strong under a forceful, powerful government who allowed such life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, but with caution and limits. The Articles of Confederation gave a lot of power to the state itself instead of focusing on the power of the government. Under the Articles, colonies and states basically ruled themselves, causing problems from state to state. On the nation as a whole, this created an issue and a concern. The government needed power over the all the states while the states retained some individual power, also. This made the systems of government from state to state far more fair, causing less conflict between the citizens of each state.

In U.S. history, there are two Articles of Confederation. The first was formed after the American colonists declared their independence from Britain and created their own government; the second when the southern states seceded from the North. In the second Articles, there was no event that proved they weren't working. They ceased to exist when the South lost the Civil War. The first failed mainly because there wasn't written into it a system of taxation that was equitable for the country to maintain a government, a military, and a presence on the world stage. After the War of Independence, the founders of the country decided that rather than revise the Articles of Confederation, they would rewrite a new Constitution, taking into account what they had learned after many years of war and independent governance.
