IN 1887, a revolution by white Americans, forced King Kalakaula to sign a new constitution which stripped the monarchy of much of his power and gave new voice to white Americans. When Kalakaula died in 1891, his sister Lilliloukalani drew up a new constitution and restoring the monarch, but before it could take effect a band of Americans took control and appealed to the US who sent in marines. A republic was declared and it soon requested annexation to the US. The US was willing to annex Hawaii for a naval base, to guarantee a supply of sugar and to keep it from being overrun by some European country or Japan. The US saw Hawaii as a future naval base and a steady source of sugar and they feared some European country of Japan might overrun it in the future.

What event led to Hawaii's annexation as a U.S territory?

Hawaii's annexation as a U.S. territory was primarily driven by the overthrow of Queen Liliʻuokalani in 1893, which was supported by American business interests and the U.S. government. Following the overthrow, a provisional government was established, and in 1898, the U.S. formally annexed Hawaii through the Newlands Resolution amid the context of the Spanish-American War and the desire for a strategic military presence in the Pacific. This annexation was completed despite significant opposition from native Hawaiians.
