Unions
During the late 19th century, one practice used by employers against workers was blacklisting. Another practice was yellow-dog contracts.
It was a derogatory term for Strikebreakers who came in and took the jobs that workers were striking against.

Workers protested against harsh working conditions. This led to the formation of unions in order to protect the rights of the worker.

the workers outrageously protested their rights
Workers protested against dangerous working conditions, long hours, low pay, little or no benefits, short or no lunch breaks or breaks of any kind, etc.
The first protest in history was performed by ancient Egyptians at Dair El-madina in 1152 BC. It was performed against the famous king Ramses III from the 20th family. The workers were protesting against delays in their payment and they protested by halting their work.
Because companies and the governments were working to exploit workers, underpay them, and if they protested, kill them in the streets.
There was such an abundance of unskilled workers that if they protested for better working conditions, they would get fired and easily replaced by someone who was eager for a job.
I believe it's workers & Sailors :]
The term "strike" began in 1798, when British sailors refused to work and lowered, or struck, their sails. From then on, workers say that they are "on strike."
