In the late 1800's, a countries power and strength was determined by the size of it's Empire. Since Germany had only been a country for a few years, it felt that the other countries had had a better chance of getting good colonies. Therefore it started to steal parts of other countries colonies.
That meant that other countirers started to become wary of Germany, and soon Alliances were made. France and Russia made an Alliance and Britain was later put inside that, making the Tiple Entente.
Germany now had a real fear of being surrounded and having to fight a war on both side, so it made the Triple Alliance with Italy and Autrio-Hungary. These Alliances caused much tension between the countries and soon a war was expected.
