World War 2 began on September 1, 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. The Soviet Union invaded from the east on September 17, and Poland was completely overrun by September 30 and divided between the two agressors. On September 3 Britain and France declared war because they had guaranteed the independence of Poland.
Both were subjected to unprovoked attack, The USSR by Germany and the US by Japan.
