The Treaty Of Ghent preceded the second phase of the War of 1812.
The first phase of the war began when the legislators known as the "War Hawks" stampeded US president James Madison into starting a war with Canada, on the belief that forcibly annexing Canada would be, in the words of Thomas Jefferson, "a mere matter of marching".
It wasn't. In a series of battles, a small force of British regulars, and about three times as many Canadians and natives, routed the American invaders, who retreated back across the border, and surrendered Detroit, Buffalo and Fort Dearborn (Chicago).
The second phase involved the British counterattack, which took most of the coast of Maine and famously resulted in the burning of the White House. However, the British, tied up in a much, much larger war against Napoleon, had no intention of holding on to captured territory (let alone undoing the American revolution) and happily negotiated a treaty that returned both sides to the old borders.

The War of 1812, fought between the United States and Great Britain, was fought in several distinct combat-theaters and had several distinct stages. Its second phase came in 1814-1815, with additional British forces devoted to the war after Britain's European conflict (with France) had concluded. Some initial success was enjoyed, such as at the Battle of Bladensburg in August 1814, which was followed by the burning of Washington, D.C. The British went on, however, to suffer significant defeats, including at New Orleans in January 1815, and soon concluded a peace treaty which ended the war's second phase and the war itself.
