Latin or western Christianity and Greek or Eastern Christianity were declared the state religion of the Roman Empire by the Edict of Thessalonicca issued by the co-emperors Gratian and Theodosius in 380. Later these two churches came to be called Catholic and Orthodox respectively. The edict also branded dissident Christian doctrines as heretic and banned them. Theodosius immediately persecuted the main dissident Christian doctrine: Arian Christianity.

The co-emperors Theodosius I and Gratian issued the Edict of Thessalonicca in 380 which made mainstream Christianity the sole legitimate religion of the empire. It also banned dissident Christian doctrines which were branded heretic. Mainstream Christianity was the Latin/Western Church and the Greek/eastern Church. Later they came to be called Catholic and Orthodox respectively. Theodosius persecuted the dissident doctrines, especially Arian Christianity, which was popular around the empire. He also persecuted pagan religions.
