First of all it is Wegener, Alfred Lothar Wegener to be percised. He was a german scientist who had the hypothesis for continental drift. His hypothesis got rejected by other scientist because it interferred with their ideas on how mountains form.Wegener used Spitsbergen to support his evidence for continental drift because Spitsbergen is now a snowy reigon and geoigists had found fossils of tropical plants.Tropical plants cannot grow in a snowy reigon.
Pangaea implies at some part in the Earth's evolution, probably before the rise of mammals and intelligent life ( Man) there was one major world continent that since has split up into the present seven. As life of intelligent type did not exist at the time, there is no way fossils can be dragged in to prove things one way or the other, though it does have a relative bearing on Atlantis and Atlantean studies.
His idea was not accepted because people back then did not believe that the plates could move. They also thought you could fall off the Earth but that is a different question. The theory was put forward first by Abraham Orthelius but was fully developed by Alfred Wegner. His theory was not thought of because people thought it was not possible for the tectonic plates of the earth to move.
Wegener made a strong case for continental drift as you may know. E.g. similar rock strata on opposing continents, similar fossil types located in geographically distant regions, evidence of glaciation and the general jig-saw fit of the continents. He could not explain however how the continents moved, that is, what force was acting on them and causing them to drift. He suggested that a combination of centrifugal force from the Earth's rotation and gravitational forces from objects in space (similar to what causes tides) moved the continents. Calculations proved this to be impossible. Since he could not explain the mechanism because little about plate tectonics was known at the time, his ideas were not widely accepted in the scientific community.

Scientist rejected Wegners hypothesis of continental drift at first because he did not have enogh evidence to support his theory. He failed to provide a suitable mechanism that could cause the continents to move.

Yes he did. When Wegener was trying to convince people that millions of years ago there was only one super continent (Pangaea) he used facts like glossopteris fossils being spread across different continents to support his evidence.
