From what I know, limestone is alkali, and high pH water would not weather alkali things. For the case of limestone, it might even make the limestone bigger (think so).

The evidence might be unreliable because technology and other knowledge has advanced since that time, and their evidence might have been biased.
It might damage it by the erosion people walking over the limestone wearing it to nothing and over the years it will just be like holes
Acid rain is probably sulphurous acid (H2SO3) Limestone is calcium carbonate. (CaCO3) Remember the general reaction equ'n Acid + Carbonate = salt + water +Carbonate dioxide. Hence H2SO3 + CaCO3 = CaSO3 + H2O + CO2 So the limestone has dissolved in to ,at best, calcium sulphite.
