uhm the jury ? he cried .
The significant factor that forces Jem over the threshold toward adulthood is the conviction on Tom Robinson. Jem was sure that Tom was going to win the case and the fact that he was found guilty and on top of that a death sentence was too much for him. Jem had to realize that when your become an adult everything does not work out as you would have planned, thanks to the ignorance of certain people (in this case, the jury).
One piece of evidence that Jem was starting to grow up and identify with the adult world is his increased sense of responsibility and protectiveness towards Scout. He also showed a growing understanding of the complexities of racial injustice and social issues in Maycomb. Additionally, Jem's reaction to Tom Robinson's trial and its outcome demonstrated his emerging awareness of the harsh realities of the adult world.
Jem cannot believe the injustice of Tom's trial. He is incredulous that Tom was convicted due to his race, and only his race; he does not understand how the jury was able to convict this obviously innocent man. Jem had lived a fairly "shielded" life, and when the trial occurred he learnt of the prejudice and racism in Maycomb.
