Both!
he wasn't he was a horrible person
The most famous Cromwell is Oliver Cromwell. He is famous for being responsible for the overthrow of the British monarchy and for turning England into a republican commonwealth. According to the philosopher David Hume Cromwell was a dictator, but according to many others he was a hero of liberty.
A personal view: Any General who aspires to greatness does not massacre innocent women & children because of religious intolerance. (Or any other reason for that matter) This disbars Cromwell as a Hero in my view.
because people kept calling him a hero and he didn't want to rule because he didn't believe in kings or queens so in stead he became lord protector.

He intimidated and physically prevented his opponents from voting against him, therefore it seemed (for a while) that he was popular.
Cromwell's supporters answer to his enemies calling him greedy was, "Cromwell gave a lot of his power to other Puritans and all Puritans wanted to end all wicked behaviour. So where is the greed in that?" Hope these helped this question was part of my history homework which was Oliver Cromwell- Hero or Villain? :)
Most people had and still have mixed opinions on Oliver Cromwell. Some think he was a hero and some think he was a villain. It very much depends on their personal political and religious views.

From 1653 to 1658
Oliver Cromwell was a Puritan, and his army was called the New Model Army. Opinions are divided as to whether he was a hero or a genocidal dictator. The Irish in particular hated him as he brutally subjugated the Irish people and forbid them to practice their Catholic religion. Some believe that he was a hero for ending the institution of absolute monarchy and promoted tolerance in religion (apparently excepting Catholics). He felt that God was guiding his military and political actions. Cromwell's government was only successful as long as he lived. After he died, the monarchy was restored and his body was exhumed, beheaded and hanged.
