The space between the Earth and the Sun is essentially a vacuum, yet we get plenty of heat from the Sun.
electromagnetic radiation
Radiation is process by which heat/energy is transferred from one medium to another without heating the medium for eg, light passing through glass
It is electromagnetic radiation
Radiation (electromagnetic radiation does not require a medium, so light, and all other forms, including infrared radiation, can traverse empty space).
Radiation needs no medium to travel as it is a simple transmission of electromagnetic waves and here heat is transferred not by heating the particles alternatively as in conduction or convection but directly through waves.
Convection takes place through a material medium between source and sink. There isn't any material medium between sun and earth, and we are therefore thankful that radiation exists.
Radiation in heat transfer is one of three known modes of heat transfer: conduction (as heat transfer in solids and less effective in liquids)), Convection (as in liquids and gases), and radiation (that not necessarily require a medium for the transfer). Heat of sun is transferred to us in the vacuum space by radiation heat transfer.
Radiant heat or Radiation
Electromagnetic Radiation requires no medium. Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation, and it can traverse the stars.
Heat is transferred through Convection, Conduction, and Radiation. Convection is heat transferred through a liquid medium such as air, as felt from your furnace. Conduction is through a solid medium. One instance of this takes place through the bottom of a cooking pan. Radiation is transferred through a void in the form of low frequency light waves, or infra-red radiation. This can easily be observed by moving in and out of a shadow into the sun. The air temperature around you remains constant, but you instantly feel the heat of the sun. That's from the sun's radiation.
Radiation does not require a medium.
