the benefit of meiosis is that there is genetic recombination hence, helps in variation of characters .

that is the reason why children are SIMILAR to their parents but DO NOT look like them completely.

With binary fission you get two clones, with no genetic shuffling or variability whereas with meiosis you can have descendants that are genetically similar but still different from you.

In Biology generally more robust pools have more variability in them.

A Advantage would be, you would get more of a variety of species.

higher adaptability in environments because of a higher variety, recombination because of the healthy cross-overs, and higher chance of reproduction.

Do Viruses multiply through binary fission?

No, they do not. They are hijackers. Once they get attached to the cell of a living cell, they can take it over and "make" the living cell produce virus particles instead of cell parts. These particles can assemble into more viruses and then they break out of the cell (killing it) and begin the process again. No, only living cells divide by binary fission. Viruses are not alive.

A colony of bacteria originates from how many bacteria?

All it takes is one bacteria. The cell's divide by binary fission where the microbes DNA splits to form a new cell.

Is crossing over unique to meiosis?

Yes. Crossover only occurs in prophase of meiosis I. Becuase it does not occur in mitosis, all the cells in our body are supposed to have the same genetic information (of course, excluding the cases where somatic mutations occur, such as in cancer).

Crossing over occurs during which phase of meiosis?

Crossing over occurs during Prophase I of meiosis.

What happens in meiosis one that does not occur in meiosis?

the synapsis and crossing over of homologous chromosomes

During which process does crossing-over occur?

crossing over occurs in meiosis I, specifically during prophase

How do cells at the beginning of meosis compare to the cells at the end of meiosis?

There's no spindle fibers at the end of meiosis and the beggining of the meiosis is crossing over.

What stage occurs when crossing over occurs in meiosis?

Prophase I of Meiosis.

Why do plants need meiosis?

Meiosis occurs in the reproductive cells to form male and female gametes. For sexual reproduction meiosis is essential. Genetic advance is achieved by crossing over in chromosomes during meiosis, hence meiosis helps in evolution of races in plants.Meiosis occurs in the reproductive cells to form male and female gametes.
