Cloud computing is basically the practice of hosting servers on a network like the internet to store, manage, use and access your data as opposed to using a physical computer for instance.
Through cloud computing it's easier to actually store a larger volume of data and host bigger servers than possible with local computers. For example if you want to expand the capacity of the machine used to store data you can easily scale a cloud server that is hosted on a remote network than a physical device that has its limits.
But this is not like a shared server hosting solution. You see in a shared hosting solution you actually have to share the resources used in the server to manage and store your data and most time its impossible to expand the resources as much as you want and it's not even safe most of the time. With cloud hosting although the storing space is virtual and is made with the combination of a network of devices the server space is not shared and it doesn't share the resources with other users. So the security of your data is much higher too. Less room for traffic bottlenecks in the system too.
