In short, Martin Luther found theological issues with Catholic doctrine, tried to get the problems corrected, and brought the issues to attention by nailing a list of the problems he found on the church door (known as the "41 Theses"). The leaders of the church refused to change anything and threatened to excommunicate Luther if he didn't retract his statements.

He refused, and was excommunicated from the Catholic church. He then founded his own church, known today as the Lutheran church. This started a trend of people making their own churches, like the King of England and the Anglican church.
