It's thought that the Vikings may have been the first explorers to land on the coast of North America, and they are said to have even established some settlements on the East Coast where they made a living from fishing, hunting, and trading with the local Indian tribes. There is also evidence that the Welsh landed in North America at around the same time, headed by an expedition lead by Prince Madoc of Gwynedd. The Welsh are said to have been more successful at maintaining a permanent presence in North America, venturing some way inland and entering into a permanent pact of Peace with several Indian tribes, including the Mandan Indians. The Mandans were taught to speak Welsh, and continued to have a knowledge of the language until they were wiped out by a cholera epidemic in the 18th Century, although their descendents continued to speak it into Victorian times.
