It extends from the medulla oblongata to the first or second lumbar vertebra (L1 or L2).
In general, the human vertebral column has a soft S shape. The cat's vertebral column, on the other hand, is a soft C shape. That is to say, a cat's vertebral column curves once whereas the human's curves twice, in opposite directions.
The vertebral column (commonly called "Backbone") is located directly on the opposite side of the thoracic (chest) cavity relative too the sternum. In short... vertebral column is the backbone, in the back... the sternum is the front of the rib cage, in the front.
