The spirit of French nationalism had made possible the mass armies of the revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. However, Napoleon's spread of the principles of the French Revolution beyond France indirectly brought a spread of nationalism as well. The French aroused nationalism in two ways. First, they were hated as oppressors. This hatred stirred the patriotism of others in oppostition to the French. Second, the French showed the people of Europe what nationalism was and what a nation in arms could do.
Because of nationalism, Adams negotiated treaties with Britain that reduced the number of navy ships on the Great Lakes and settled bounty disputes. Florida was added to the US.
The emergence of conservativism in the 1800's was a negative development for European nations. It was conservative ideas that led to events like the revolution in France. It hindered reform in countries like Britain and France that truly needed it. If conservatism had triumphed then revolts in places like Belgium, Poland, and Greece wouldn't have been able to strike out against enemy nations. It is seen through people like Rousseau, Smith and the great John Locke, that true triumph lies withim the realm of liberalism.
Nationalism is the belief that your nation is the best in the world. Two countries with that sentiment are bound to clash. A perfect example is between Britain and Germany. Britain had the world's greatest navy and, in order to defeat Britain in an inavoidable conflict, Germany began building up its navy. Britain responded by building more ships. The two nations became rivals on the sea because thier nationalistic ideals made them think they had to have the better navy.
