The North - a big factor in Union victory
First, understand that some Northern States (Maryland) were slave states. Businesses in the North transported slaves to the US, and sold them in the South (slave ships). Businesses in the North invested in the South, including companies that used slaves (coal mining, building railroads) and Northern businesses wanted goods grown in the South by slaves- cotton and tobacco.
The industries that are found in South Italy are typically small businesses. There is also the agriculture industry, which is found in both the north and south.
In both the north and the south slaves worked hard and were owned. In the south slaves mostly worked on plantations; in the north many slaves worked in businesses and were able to work for money in their spare time.
North. It was a big factor in the Union victory. They were able to move whole armies by rail.
The industrial development occurred primarily in the North. The tariffs following the War of 1812 helped businesses in the North and cost people in the South more money for goods. This drove a deep wedge between the regions.
North had factories that made goods- they wanted higher tariffs on imports to protect their businesses from competition. The South wanted to be able to buy from the North OR from foreign markets, and wanted lower tariffs (lower prices for them to pay)
