New York City had a pro-slavery faction that mainly consisted of Irish people. They had been told by the Democratic party, that the freed slaves would come north and take their jobs. The government instituted a draft for male citizens. Since black people, either free or slave, weren't considered citizens, they were not included in the draft. As a result, the Draft Riot of 1863 raged for five days, becoming one of the most violent and vile, the nation has ever known.
