The old commander (John Paul Jones) was not loyal to Washington. Washington got really mad at him for many reasons and Jon Paul Jones was very tired of this. John Paul Jones traded to the British side and fought against Washington. Washington had no choice to name a new commander who was Benjamin Franklin. So thats what led Washington, had had no other choice.

There were several factors that led Washington to name a new commander in the south during the American Revolutionary War. One factor was the failure of previous commanders in the region, such as Horatio Gates at the Battle of Camden. Another factor was the need for a fresh strategy and leadership to counter the British forces in the south, who were gaining momentum. Lastly, Washington wanted to appoint a commander who had experience and could rally local militias and support for the cause in the southern colonies.
