There were several factors that led Washington to name a new commander in the south during the American Revolutionary War. One factor was the failure of previous commanders in the region, such as Horatio Gates at the Battle of Camden. Another factor was the need for a fresh strategy and leadership to counter the British forces in the south, who were gaining momentum. Lastly, Washington wanted to appoint a commander who had experience and could rally local militias and support for the cause in the southern colonies.
