Lewis Henry Douglass was one of the three sons of Frederick Douglass, the famed abolitionist.
During the Civil War, Lewis Douglass served as a Sgt. Major in the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, an all-black regiment which Frederick Douglass helped recruit soldiers for. Lewis Douglass was wounded at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, on July 18, 1863. He was later discharged from the service by reason of disability.
Although a tactical defeat, the Battle of Fort Wagner proved to be a political victory for the Union since the valor of the 54th against hopeless odds proved the worth of black soldiers, and helped to encourage additional recruitment. The Second Battle of Fort Wagner is depicted in the climax of the movie Glory.
