Horses like to be given treats like carrots, apples, and grain like oats or barley. As a main meal, though horses prefer 90% grass hay, and grass to graze on a regular basis.

Treats as those above should only be given sparingly mainly due to the very high carbohydrate/sugar levels that can make a horse colic if fed too much (among other issues), as well as according to the level of work or activity the horse has been subject to, regardless of breed, as well as physiological status and/or gender. For instance, turnips shouldn't be fed to mares or foals and should be fed sparing because too much of it has been linked to thyroid problems.

What is are the three types of feeds for horses?

Well the first is forage, this consists of hay, grass, haylage and the like, next are concentrated feeds, usually in the form of pellets or nuggets, and third are grains such as oats, barley, and corn. Some people group concentrates and grains together but they are not the same thing. Horses can also be fed 'succulents' such as fruits and vegetable's.

Can horses have maple syrup?

Yes, they love eating it. It should be fed only as a supplement, like as a means to encourage them to eat a strange feed, or as part of a protein block. It shouldn't be fed straight like hay or grass since it is very rich to cattle and could cause them digestive problems like bloat or acidosis.
