Under Windows I believe the only file system with full support for this is NTFS.

On the Mac its standard HFS+ file system has always supported this.

On Unix and Linux all native file systems supported this.

What permissions control access to the files and folders stored on disk volumes formatted with the NTFS file system?

In short: a very good understanding of file and folder permissions. There is no clear answer to this question. Folder and file permissions are very complicated. You can individually control folder and file permissions by right clicking on the folder/file, select properties, click on security and click on 'Edit...'. Be aware that this can have far reaching consequences. I suggest you go to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/ and learn about file and folder permissions. It is not easy and very tricky.

What is the difference between a share permission and NTFS permission?

Hide Parent PostAuthor: Charles PoffDate: Saturday, August 29, 2009 9:53:33 AM CDTSubject: Week 6 - Module 6 - Files & Folders (2261)What is the primary difference between share permissions and NTFS permissions? Are there any differences in their types of permissions? If so, describe themNote: I am looking to see that you understand the differences in and between the actual permission levels, e.g. Everyone, System, Users, Administrators, etc.Share permissions are the permissions you set for a folder when you share that folder. The share permissions determine the type of access others have to the shared folder across the network. There are three types of share permissions: Full Control, Change, and Read.NTFS permissions determine the action users can take for a folder or file both across the network and locally. Unlike share permissions, NTFS permissions offer several other permissions besides Full Control, Change, and Read that can be set for groups or individually. The most restrictive permission applies when share and NTFS permissions conflict.

What local folder permission under the FAT system allows users to delete the folder?

The FAT filesystem has no permissions. Anybody has full access to each and every file in the drive. This, combined with its widespread implementation, is one of the reasons why it is the de facto filesystem of USB drives. On the other hand, NTFS has permissions. To be able to delete a folder, a user needs to have either Full Control or Modify permissions. In Windows, to set these, right click the folder, select Properties, and under the Security tab, select the user, and check the Allow boxes below. You need to have permissions yourself beforehand (either by being the original owner, or by doing this as an administrator)

Does every file and folder on an NTFS drive have an owner?

Yes, every object in an NTFS system (files, folders, junctions, etc) has an owner. This owner is, by default, the creator of the object, but may be changed with sufficient system permissions.

My macbook says you do not have permission to run Skype what's wrong?

One of the 'security' methods used by OSX is file permissions. Basically, everything on the hard drive can be considered a file, whether it will be a document or an application once it is read into the computer. Permissions extend from the object downward. So, if a folder is 'locked' then nothing in the folder, or within folders that are inside it, can be opened if you don't have permission to do so. If you have SKYPE in a strange location, OSX may not allow you to open it. Put it in the Applications folder. There are at least two Application folders on your computer. Each user has one, and the system has one. If a user other than yourself installed SKYPE into his Application Folder, then you will not have permission to open it, even if you move it into your app folder. Sometimes permissions can get confused. Use Disk Utility to repair them. Another simple way to fix your problem would be to install SKYPE again and make sure it is put in the System Application Folder.

What is the C system volume information?

c:\System Volume Information is a special folder used by Windows. It is not a virus. In an NTFS system, the permissions are set so that no one, not even an administrator, can access it - This is because it contains critical things that no one but the operating system should touch.

What do you mean by Access Permission?

If you cannot differentiate between Microsoft and people answering questions on a random website, you should not be altering Access Permissions. That said, you can configure who can access any given folder in a NT-based Windows operating system. The file owner or an Administrator can give or change these permissions.
