In the 1977 referendum to choose a new Australian national anthem, the second choice was 'Waltzing Matilda' (which, in retrospect, would have been an odd choice, given that it is about a sheep-stealer...). Advance Australia Fair gained 51.4 per cent approval rating from the public, whilst Waltzing Matilda had 19.6 per cent.
