Well obviously they have first hand encounter with fire so in order to be fire fighter you must know the treatment around burns. Of course, they don't have to be as knowledgeable as doctors but they have to have somewhat of a good understanding. Some firefighters also must know treatment for shock as the fear of fire sometimes puts people in that situation.

All firefighters are required to have basic first aid and CPR training. Most firefighters have more advanced medical traing but are generally not required to hold EMT certifications, unless their job specifically calls for it.
In some minor cases such as a cut finger, first aid may be able to deal with a full treatment by cleansing the wound and dressing it. In other more major cases such as CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), first aid can help administer lifesaving treatment but ongoing treatment would be given by a paramedic and/or Doctor.
Because First Aid gives them treatment, comfort and if the injury is serious, a better chance of survival.

"Heartbreak" is a psychological condition, and as such, there is very limited treatment for it from a first aid point of view.
