Well, as there was a language barrier between them all they could believe was what there first impressions were, so what they saw was a strange man with strange clothes different colored skin and a strange language. So they may have been interested in him or even awe stricken by him. Furthermore as seen from how the natives showed the first settlers many things (growing corn hunting the local game etc.) you can see that the natives were originally a very friendly and peaceful people.
