One Reason for that is that they are not spitting out food but rocks, this is because most aquarium fish like gold fish can't chew so they pick up rocks in there mouth and they use them to MASH up food so they can eat it more easily and then they spit out the rocks

usually Betta fish spit out their food when they have eaten too much food.
It can also occur if it's a certain type of food and he/she doesn't like it.
