First off, you said the mother and father put the different flavor candy canes in the stockings. Isn't that Santa's job? Then you changed from flavors to colors. That in itself messes up the problem. And, you could have all green candy canes that are each flavored differently, like lime, kiwi, fish, seaweed and spinach. Mmmm. Or the candy canes the parents used might be red, blue, white, pink and orange meaning that none of the kids got a green one. And maybe the parents know after 15 years that their oldest kid only likes the red and white peppermint ones and would never give him the green kind. As far as odds go, one might go through boxes and boxes of different color candy canes and never find a green one. Even if there was only 1 kid in the family, if Santa had 1,000 candy canes and only one was green, the odds would be 1,000 to one. The answer then might be 5,000 to 1 with 5 kids, however, you go on to say, What are the odds Santa will put a green candy cane IN the oldest child. Now, that might be very painful, and just plane wrong. Santa would get in a lot of trouble if he did that. The only place Santa is allowed to put a candy cane is in the child's stocking, or perhaps near the stocking, or tied to a present, or in a tin if the he knows the people's home has mice or dogs. What are the odds the oldest kid will get a green candy cane? 50/50. Either he will, or he wont...unless the kid's mom really puts the candy canes in the stockings and is so cheap, that she got green ones on clearance last year after Christmas at Walmart because no one wanted them, and has saved them all year. What a mean mom! You're supposed to leave those out in a bowl for the neighbor kids to eat and get your own kids good ones next Christmas, or just let Santa handle the stockings, if you still trust him in your house after this.CJ
