One of the precepts of Buddhism is "to abstain from killing sentient beings" , therefore if devout Buddhist is to prepare food for himself, he will always prefer vegetables. However, Buddhist will eat any food given to them as offerings. According to tradition, Gautama Buddha himself died by eating spoiled (?) foods given to him as offering when he was 80 years old. However, many traditions also assert that he actually ate spoiled "pork's feed"- in other words, bad mushrooms. Not bad pork. The matter is still debated.
It depends, really.
The Buddha Indicated that you can eat whatever is offered but that you should not kill or have someone else kill for you an animal to eat. Therefore, Many Buddhists, because of their compassion to all living things, are vegetarians.
