1 Samuel 17:17-20a (NLT) says "One day Jesse said to David, 'Take this basket of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread, and carry them quickly to your brothers. And give these ten cuts of cheese to their captain. See how your brothers are getting along, and bring back a report on how they are doing.' David's brothers were with Saul and the Israelite army in the valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines. So David left the sheep with another shepherd and set out early the next morning with the gifts, as Jesse had directed him."
Note: The basket was actually an ephah which was about 3/5 bushel or 22 liters.
Before he became king, David was a shepherd of his father's sheep, and later a musician to King Saul. Saul also made him commander of his armies.
No david only killed Goliath ,with a pebble from his sling shot. But david did take four more pebbles maybe for the brothers but they ran away.

David, who would be king of Israel, wrote the line "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." (KJV), which is recorded in Psalm 23 in the Holy Bible. It is especially significant since he himself was a shepherd and knew the duties of a good shepherd; take care of the sheep, watch the sheep, protect the sheep from harm (wolves, lions, bears, etc.). He recognized that the Lord, being his shepherd, would make sure that all of his needs would be met, so that he would have want of nothing.
To take care of sheep, and shear the sheep. Also, to herd sheep. Therefore they are a Sheep herd, or Shepherd.
Take care, watch, and herd sheep.

You have to be kidding? Seriously?
The Bible describes shepherds as individuals who care for, protect, and guide a flock of sheep. They are expected to be diligent, selfless, and willing to sacrifice for the well-being of their sheep. Ultimately, shepherds are called to emulate the qualities of Jesus Christ, who is often referred to as the "Good Shepherd."
Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd. Please read John, chapter 10, verse one through 42. Christians are the "sheep" and Jesus is our "Good Shepherd". He will never leave us and will always take care of us. We have nothing to fear because of the Good Shepherd.
