The primary baboon diet is vegetarian, they will mostly eat grass, berries, leaves, roots, seeds, sap and bark.
However baboons are also opportunistic omnivores. This means that although they are primarily vegetarian, if presented with the opportunity or there is not enough vegetation in their environment, they will eat meat as well.
When baboons decide to eat meat, they will eat fish, shellfish, hares, birds, small monkeys and small (baby) antelopes.
Very, very rarely baboons will engage in cannibalism, the act of eating their own species, usually the weakest baboon in the group. This usually only occurs if other foods are scarce or unavailable.
