Eating together and sharing the work of the langer is one of the Sikh ways of showing that everyone is equal. The food is always vegetarian so that everyone can eat it. Helping in the langer is one way that Sikhs can be service to others. Sikhs believe that serving others (sewa) is a way of showing your love for God.

Langhar is the compulsory free kitchen of a Gurdwara. Volunteers from the Sangat (congregation) pay for and cook food (vegetarian, so as to welcome people of all beliefs), and this food is served to all people in the Gurdwara regardless of caste, religion, gender, age etc. completely free of charge.
