Sassafras trees are native to the area. They are found throughout Long island, there is one in my backyard, and are numerous throughout the Sunken Forest on Fire island. Native Americans made tea from sassafras and then sasparilla soda in modern times.
I would check though with an expert before consuming leaves or roots from any tree first.
giraffes are omnivores so they eat primarily plants and vegetation, which is abundant in trees which are, you guessed it, TALL. most other animals cant reach or climb trees so they scavenge on the ground where over time vegetation will become more scarce due to all the traffic. sooo, long neck + tall trees = more food for giraffes.

Trees do have food. Most of the food grown on trees are fruits and berries.
On the island the boys initially ate fruits such as berries that they found or picked from the trees. However as the novel progresses, the boys learn to hunt, and they kill pigs to eat.
