Even though the US Constitution was said to be "a living document" neither it nor the Declaration of Independence is alive. The oldest known surviving formal document(s) from history are the Dead Sea Scrolls which are about 2000 years old. There are cave paintings and smaller fragments that have been found that are older still. The oldest surviving documents from US history are probably contemporary trasnscriptions of The Mayflower Compact in in Mourt's Relation and William Bradford's journal Of Plymouth Plantation .
