The geography of that region -- Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa --was clearly formed by the gigantic glaciers of the Ice Ages. Besides flattening the land and removing most of its mountains and hills, the glacier carved out Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie.

Also, when the glaciers finally melted and went away about 10,000 years ago, they left behind numerous "terminal moraines" of deposits of gravel, sand, and boulders.

This same process of flattening the land and carving out of lakes happened in the Canadian provinces of Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, and in New York State, too.
