Pay scales

The effort bargain

Premuim pay

Contingent benefits

Pay scales vary based upon job classification; it can be hourly, weekly, or monthly wage or salary. Unions can negotiate with a single employer to raise the pay scale for certain jobs based on certain reason. Like higher wages on holidays instead of regular pay. I know a lot of places have started to pay time and ½ on Sunday's to help get people to work more. Since the rate of people either just not wanting to work these days at all or calling in on Sundays was high.

The effort bargain set standards for employees and then a way to be able to measure it. A lot of work places have to make quotas for example. I use to work in a bank for a little over 3 years and we had to hit sales quotas every quarter, and if we did based on what level of quota we hit we would get a bonus, on the other hand if you didn't hit quota for so many quarters you would get a warning, then written up and so forth until you could potentially lose your job.

Premium pay is kind of what I was talking about how a lot of places are not offering a different pay for weekend work. But this area also includes overtime, and call in pay. A lot of places will not give you premium pay if you haven't worked there for X amount of days. This helps to avoid losing money to people who don't plan on staying long anyway.

Contingent benefits are things that your employer provides to you in hopes to keep you healthy and happy. Such as insurance not only to you but if you are married to your significant other and kids, also pensions, PTO, and servance pay. A lot of people won't accept a job that doesn't offer insurance PTO and so forth. Just like Premium Pay it usually takes you working somewhere X amount of day to receive these.

Should I draw up a "free rent" agreement form for my college aged son with the requirement that he stay in school?

If you think such an agreement would help motivate your son to complete his education, it is worth formalizing the agreement. However, you need to really think about what you will do if he stops going to school. If it becomes really clear that school is not his right pathway, how will you respond? If he becomes unmotivated and does not follow through, how would you enforce the agreement? Many parents help their sons and daughters establish a life plan and support them in finding the right steps for that plan. I think that is a great idea, it will teach a good life lesson. Going to school is his job and as long as he works he is taken care of.

Why is Samuel gompers important?

He promoted "thorough" organization and collective bargaining to secure shorter hours and higher wages, the first essential steps, he believed, to emancipating labor. He also encouraged the AFL (American Federation of Labor) to take political action to "elect their friends" and "defeat their enemies." His belief led to the development of procedures for collective bargaining and contracts between labor and management which are still in use today. In practice, AF of L unions were important in industrial cities, where they formed a central labor office to coordinate the actions of different AF of L unions. Issues of wages and hours were the usual causes of strikes, but many strikes were assertions of jurisdiction, so that the plumbers, for example, used strikes to ensure that all major construction projects in the city used union plumbers. In this goal they were ideally supported by all the other construction unions in the AF of L fold.
